ACTION ALERT:  Asheville City Council is Discriminating Against Commission Applicants Based on Race

The City of Asheville is currently discriminating on the basis of race in regards to at least one of its city commissions.  The City has many volunteer boards and commissions where citizens can provide input into government functions including planning, capital projects, and other such policies and actions.  One such commission is The Human Relations Commission.  This Commission’s responsibilities include advancing equity and “engaging the community regarding the utilization of City-funded programs and policies for the promotion of human relations”.

ILLEGAL RACE BASED DISCRIMINATION

The City has made clear that while non-white persons are free to serve on the Commission, white persons must prove their worthiness.  A white person can only serve if they possess an additional characteristic such as being a member of the LGBTQ+ community, living in public housing, or having a disability.  If a white applicant cannot show one of these additional factors, they are automatically disqualified from service.  This type of disparate treatment on the basis of race is not only wrong, but illegal.

HOW YOU CAN HELP FIGHT THIS ILLEGAL RACIAL DISCRIMINATION

WNC Citizens for Equality is seeking city residents who would be willing to apply for the Human Relations Commission who do not meet the City’s racial criteria and who would be willing to participate in litigation to enforce Constitutional and federal law against racial discrimination.   There is no cost to participants.   If you, or someone you know, would be willing to participate, please submit a contact form.
